I have tried installing the latest drivers for Synaptics touchpad and MS/Intellimouse separately, one-at-a-time and both together. Then the hardware tab shows a mouse only. As soon as I plug in the Intellimouse the touchpad's advanced features become unavailable and revert to factory presets. If I unplug the mouse and reboot, the Synaptics touchpad is available with all advanced features.
